‘Batman v. Superman’ Will Be Rated R

…on Blu-Ray. The MPAA has announced that they received a version of the film titled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition with a note attached that read, ‘EDITED VERSION. CONTENT IS DIFFERENT FROM PG-13 VERSION, BULLETIN NO. 2393 (9/30/15).’

Many have speculated over the past week that the success of Deadpool may lead to an R rated Batman film. Nobody could’ve predicted, however, that this would be it.

The announcement is surprising to say the least, especially considering how science-fictiony the last two trailers for the movie have come across — featuring a CGI Doomsday and corny (at best) lines delivered by Jessie Eisenberg and company. Could it be that those trailers were designed to reel in a Marvel-skewed audience (and failed)?

I certainly hope so. And if this new MPAA rating is any sign of what’s to come, I think we may be looking at a bold new universe of superhero films.
